Bought this lens as a macro and zoom lens. I was very happy with results. Macro shots are miles great than Nikon 70-300G or Vr, as it gets a very close 1:2. Not super sharp at 300 but I am more than happy as the town is sharp sufficient for my liking.
Flare is quite controllable, though the shake at 300mm at quite noticable if you have shaky hands. It also makes a nice portraits lens as the bokeh is quite pleasent Imho. So far I'm quite happy with the results.
The lens is motorised but I believe this is quite dissimilar than Hsm that Sigma has on other more costly lenses(hence it does not has the Hsm designation on it). You cannot focus manually as you would on Hsm lenses. You need to set it to M first, then you only you can focus manually. The motor is quite loud and autofocus is bit slow on the longer end. But for the price, this lens is easily a excellent value for money.
