Designed exclusively for Nikon DX-format SLR cameras, this 18-55mm lens approximates the picture angle performance of a 27-82.5mm lens in the 35mm format, ensuring superb versatility in a wide variety of shooting situations. The lens offers such features as a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) with a compact rod-type design that provides fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing; an ED glass element that minimizes chromatic aberration and produces a superior optical performance; a hybrid aspherical element that delivers high resolution and contrast; and a seven-blade rounded diaphragm that produces more natural out-of-focus highlights. The focus mode switch, meanwhile, makes it a breeze to switch quickly between autofocus (A) and manual (M) focus. Finally, the lens's Super Integrated Coating minimizes ghosting and flare to provide an even higher contrast and more vivid images, even in challenging light conditions. All Nikon lenses carry a five-year warranty.

Nikon 18-55 dSLR Lens : Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

i have 3 lenses so far for my nikon, this one (the 18-55mm), the one i bought it with (an 18-135mm), and a 50mm non-zooming lens. i bought this lens to have more managable lens for when i was going on a trip where i felt the 18-135 would be too bulky or get a bit heavy. this lens fits the bill well, the only things i would point at are this:
while yes, this is lighter and a little smaller than the 18-135mm lens, its not much shorter (if at all), and feels a little less solidly built than it. however, it is -noticably- lighter.

the only complaint i would mention is that this lens seems to be louder when auto-focussing than the 18-135mm is. im not exactly certain why, but it is something i noticed immediately. it doesnt seem to affect anything, obviously.

despite those things, i do still feel this is a good lens to own as a less bulky, light-weight alternative to the larger 18-135mm lens, and is obviously more versatile than the non-zoom 50mm lens.

Customer Review :

Great Addition to the DX Line-up : Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR

I just received my Nikon 55-300 lens and after taking pictures for an afternoon would like to share my impressions and opinions about the lens. I have had both the 55-200VR and the 70-300VR lens to compare it with.

Things I like:
1. Optically it is sharp with excellent color and contrast. I would rate it on par with the 70-300. Didn't do any extensive testing just compared pictures I have taken with both.
2. Lighter & smaller than the 70-300. Fits in camera bag better. Used to carry the 70-300 in a separate case.
3. Metal mount vs plastic mount on the 55-200 which was my biggest complaint with that lens. (optically I was pleased with the pictures I got from the 55-200) and 100mm more reach than the 55-200.
4. Solid, well built lens on par with other prosumer Nikon lens.
5. Wider than the 70-300. Equivalent of an 82.5-450mm vs 105-450mm.

Things I don't like:
1. Zoom action is a little sticky at the longer end. Not as smooth as either the 70-300 or 55-200 lens.
2. Slow auto focus. About the same as the 55-200 slower than the 70-300.
3. Manuel focus not as smooth as the 70-300 and harder to get precise focus. No instant override of auto focus, have to move a switch.

Overall I am pleased with the lens and will keep it. I added the Canon 500D 2 element closeup lens and get excellent closeup pictures, maybe not macro lens quality but very good. I also used the Nikon 3T & 4T close up lens with the 55-200 with excellent results. I would have been willing to spend a little more for this lens to have the instant manuel focus overide and faster focus of the 70-300 and smoother zoom action which is why I rated it 4 stars instead of 5. Which lens would I recommend? If you do not plan to purchase an FX camera I would get this one over the 70-300 for a DX camera. If you don't use a lot of telephoto and don't want to spend the money the 55-200 is an excellent alternative just be careful with the plastic lens mount. I hope this helps anyone who is debating which lens to buy.

Great Lens : Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

This is a great lens, and a good upgrade over the older 18-55mm ii with No Vr. The image stabilization admittedly helps you here, i used to get blurry pictures in the evenings and dark environments. This one solves those problems. There is one basal problem with this lens. It lacks Ed and that means severe lens flare and ghosting. Only way to solve this is to avoid taking pics in the direction of the sun or animated lights. A lens hood may also help. Any way while night times you may not be able to do anyone about street lights as you are probably taking a direct photo of them. For that The 55-200mm Vr does have two sets of Ed which dramatically reduces flare and ghosting development it probably the best telephoto lens for Nikon. Merge this with the 55-200mm Vr and 90% of your photography needs are covered. If you admittedly care about lens flare then you should probably stick with the Non-Vr 18-55mm as it is a better lens while day time with Ed. Stock Non-Vr 18-55mm is proven to be also sharper. Your option but allinclusive its a wonderful lens. I have this with the 55-200mm Vr and i probably wont ever need another lens.

Customer Review :

Dollar for dollar the best buy in a spirited sharp lens : Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

I was surprised to find, after reading so many certain reviews of this lens, that the copy I received was so fuzzy at wide-open apertures that I could see it on Un-Magnified images right on my D90's 3" screen.

All lenses lose sharpness at wide apertures: this is a matter of basic physics and is the result of something called spherical aberration. Some are much good than others though, thanks to good optic designs that more effectively definite for this tendency. The 35mm f/2, for example, is very good wide open; the 85mm f/1.8 is decent (and very approved for portrait use). My copy of the 50mm f/1.8 lost both sharpness and vital discrepancy as f/1.8 was approached. I would quantify it as follows:

f/1.8: very fuzzy (well beyond "soft"), reduced contrast, almost un-useable
f/2.8: still quite soft, much improved contrast
f/4: slightly soft, good contrast
f/5.6: sharp, good contrast
f/8: very sharp, good contrast

These results were repeatable on my sample and held true regardless of shutter speed and technique.

Notes:

- The advantage of a lens like this is the potential to use wide apertures. A good portrait lens need not be particularly sharp, but wider than f/4 my copy of this lens was soft enough that I would use it for nothing other than casual people-photography. It would not suffice for vital night or low-light photography, or for general photography where sharpness might be desired. For photos of population it was fine at f/2.8, but below that it lost so much sharpness, and enough contrast, that photos of almost any field looked dull.

- The lens seems like an certain choice as a first prime due to its price and the many exquisite reviews of it here on Amazon and elsewhere. Even also the sharpness degradation wide open, I found it less useful than I'd hoped. On a crop-size Dslr, it is a short telephoto lens, and it just hasn't turned out to be a focal distance I use all that much. I would urge possible buyers to reconsider the 35mm f/2 before this lens as it gives the traditional "normal" perspective on a Nikon crop-size Dslr.

- Some reviewers like this lens for portrait use, but again, I found it poorly grand for this. The 85mm f/1.8 is authentically more expensive, but it has far more possible as a portrait lens.

- This is not a high-contrast lens. It does not use any Ed glass elements, which seem to be quite magical at enhancing contrast, and color rendition is noticeably less vibrant than such lenses. For some types of photography this can authentically be desirable, but for general or landscape photography I prefer the higher-contrast lenses.

- My sample of this lens may have been below average, considering that most reviews of the lens are very positive. However, if you read carefully, most approved reviews do mention that it loses discrepancy and acuity at wide apertures. Ken Rockwell, for example, has reviewed the lens very positively, but when it came time to propose lenses sharp enough to be used on the new D3x, with its ultra-high-resolution sensor, he gave the similar-performing (possibly better) f/1.4 "G" version only three stars. I would submit that it is authentically not quite as sharp a lens as its reputation would lead one to believe. My exquisite 16-85mm Dx zoom, for example (the only lens I've given a five-star divulge as of this time), is far sharper than this lens up to colse to f/8 and hold an edge even there and beyond.

- Nikon has recently announced a new 35mm f/1.8 Dx lens. I've ordered one and will probably post a divulge once I've had a chance to use it. I would propose that it is very likely to be a good choice than this lens for almost any Dx user. Being designed for the smaller Dx sensor, it will probably be optimized for high linear resolutions within the smaller Dx image circle. It is also a fairly reasonable lens, not much more than this lens now that the 50mm has crept up a bit in price.

- Even if my sample is significantly poorer than average, my contact indicates that it would be a good idea to wholly test a copy of this lens before committing to buy it. Be sure to assess images at wide apertures to those made at f/8, where sharpness should be very good, and settle for yourself whether the loss of sharpness and discrepancy is approved for your purposes.

- Focus is plenty quick and accurate, at least on my sample. No problems at all in this regard (and none expected).

Final note: This is an honest divulge of a lens I've authentically owned and used, in comparison with other lenses that I've authentically owned and used. Unfortunately there are always population who click negative reviews as unhelpful no matter how definite the review, and that does a dis-service to other Amazon customers as those reviews wind up at the bottom where they are not seen. I wish more authentically vital reviews were available to help me make purchasing decisions, and I hope you think so as well.

Other Lenses:

I've had the chance to own and use many separate Nikon lenses and have posted my impressions of some of them here on Amazon. For those interested, here are short summaries. I have used all these lenses on Nikon Dx-sized Dslrs, most recently my current D90. Refer to the full reviews for further detail.

Nikon 28mm f/2.8 Af-D: *** Competent, sharp lens is a good fit as a deal Dx "normal" prime. Slow f/2.8 max gap ,break poor. Very reasonable in used market.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Hsm: *** Poor focusing consistency and below average large-aperture acuity incorporate for disappointing real-world performance. Fast max aperture, very capable if used with approved care.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8 Af-G: ****1/2 terrific lens at a deal price. Not without flaws, but exquisite in all leading respects. A pleasure to use.

Nikon 35mm f/2 Af-D: **** Sharp, especially at large apertures, moderate contrast. First-rate "normal" lens for Dx but reconsider new 35mm f/1.8 Af-S instead.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Af-D: *** My sample was unacceptably poor at large apertures. Perhaps a below-average sample. Focal distance not ideally grand to Dx.

Nikon 16-85mm Vr ***** Very sharp at all settings, exquisite contrast, very useful zoom range including true wide-angle at 16mm. exquisite Vr. Best-kept incommunicable for Dx users.

Nikon 28-200mm Af-G *** Of two samples, one was exquisite and one poor, so watch for sample variations. Very good contrast. Not ideal hand-held due to lack of Vr. Not ideal for tripod use due to design.

Nikon 55-200mm Vr **** Very good lens, very good sharpness and contrast, no fatal flaws. Cheap feel and feature-challenged, but has productive Vr. A bargain.

Nikon 70-300mm Vr *** My sample had very poor performance above 200mm, good to very good elsewhere. Good contrast, commonly very good focus performance. Good sports/action lens. Not good where vital sharpness is desired. Perhaps a below-average sample.

uncostly Moderate Wide Angle Zoom for Nikon Dx Digital Slr Cameras : Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

I upgraded to a D200 from my D70 and waited and waited and am still waiting for my 18-200 Vr. I needed a wide angle lens so I listened to Ken Rockwell (I enourage everybody to visit his site) and bought the 18-55. It is a fabulous lens, produces excellent, sharp images, is light weight, and focuses quickly. It's an uncostly build, but for the price I can use for a few years (or until my 18-200 arrives which ever is first) and feel that I have gotten more than my money's worth. Don't let the light weight fool you, though, this is a great lens.

exquisite first Dslr : Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

Nikon D3000 is Nikon beginner / entry level camera. It replaces Nikon D60. There are three major upgrade of D3000 from D60. There are 11 Auto focus theory with dynamic tracking and 3D tracking. This Af theory is the same as Nikon mid-range/enthusiast camera, D90. Also, the Lcd screen has been enlarged to 3 inches from 2.5 inches. However, the screen resolution remains the same at 230,000 dots. Also new is the Guide mode, this new mode is working as your tutor on basic photography. It helps you set up your camera, in the same time, it tells you about basic photography setting and concepts. Other than that, all looks the same, buttons, placement, viewfinder and image quality/resolution.

It is an median size for beginner Dslr camera. But if you are arrival from contract camera, you might a bit surprise of the size. On the other hand, if you are arrival from developed Dslr cameras, then you will feel this camera is contract and light.

Nikon D3000 has a thumb dial, which you will use most of the time to change shutter speed and aperture. There are mode dial on the top of the camera. Several basic buttons such as playback, delete, menu, magnifiy/zoom, and exposure compensation. There is also a function (Fn) button on the left side, near the flash that you can customize agreeing to your need.

Coming from more expand Nikon camera like Nikon D90, what missing are the Iso button, Image ability button, publish mode button, Af mode button and White balance button. If you want to change above settings, you need to go to shooting menu (green camera icon). I advise you to customize the Fn button so you can change you favorite button faster. I change my D3000 Fn button to Iso setting.

Build ability and Ergonomic
Nikon D3000 body is built by rugged plastic. There is texture in the grip area to ensure comfortable grip. The built ability of outer shell is the same or practically the same as Nikon D90. The contrast is there are more textured stop in Nikon D90 body. Ergonomically, it is good to hold, but the space between lens mount and the grip is pretty tight. If you mount bigger lens or if you have big hands, then you might not feel it comfortable. Collate to Nikon D60, I noticed that the pistol grip is more curvy instead of pointy. This is a small revising that you might appreciate.

Lcd Screen
D3000 has 3 inches Lcd screen with 230k resolution. This is considered basic, but the screen is clear, sharp. If you like to check on the details or pixel levels, it is best to check the images on your computer. In the involving light condition, this screen is relatively good. There is minimal glare/reflection.

Nikon D3000 has 95% coverage and 0.8x magnification viewfinder. It is considered small for Dslr size, but for population who moves from superzooms or developed compact, this viewfinder are big and a lot clearer. by hand focusing is more involving than the other Nikon's more developed Dslrs.

Like Nikon D5000, Nikon D3000 does not have top Lcd screen like D90 or more developed camera. Unlike many of competitors entry level Dslr cameras, Nikon D3000 does not have any live view feature.

Lens and Compatibility
Nikon D3000 comes with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Vr lens. This lens has a plastic mount, but the image ability and the light is recommendable. It never get super sharp like pro grade lens, but pro grade lens might costs more than ten times, so 18-55mm Vr is one of the best value lens out in the market.

The lens has image stabilization feature which is called Vibration reduction (Vr). It works well and quietly up to 3 stops. If you hold the camera tight and still, you can shoot up to a quarter second without petition blur.

Unfortunately, D3000 does not have built in focus motor in the camera, therefore, it can't auto focus older lenses such as the venerable Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or the legendary Nikon 85mm f/1.4D. Lenses that compatible with this camera are lenses that has built in motor (usually has Af-S code on it) and for third party lenses, look for Hsm (Sigma lens).

Image ability and Iso
Nikon D3000 employs 10 megapixel image sensor. This sensor is a bit inferior than sensors in the D90 and D300. But still this is more adequate for large print.

Image ability is exquisite up to Iso 800. At 1600, a lot of noises start to creep in especially in shadow area. At 3200 (or Hi setting), the image is unacceptable only for very small print of web.

If you turn on Noise reduction or Nr (unfortunately no low-medium-strong option), the camera with flat out the noises, but the image come to be softer and lose some details. If you concern about the lost of details, I advise you to shoot with Nr off, and then take care the images with image editing software to treat the noise.

Like other Nikon Dslr cameras, D3000 also has Auto Iso limiter. You can effectively limit the Iso and minimum shutter speed. The Auto Iso works very well and strict most of the time. My favorite way to use this is to set the camera to Auto Iso, and then use cleft mode and let the camera adjust the rest for me.

D3000 does not have 1/3 stops Iso increments, so you only can set Iso to the regular base level or 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 (Hi). But to be fair, most of the entry level Dslr cameras does not have that too.

Auto Focus and Continuous burst
The new 11 Af points are miles better than old 3 points Af system. It helps a lot in composition and fortunately, it also comes with dynamic tracking and 3D tracking which is great for involving objects and sports. The auto focus is very fast and responsive. However, D3000 has only 3 frame per second, so you might miss some shots when shooting sports or fast involving objects.

Guide Mode
Nikon's Guide mode is a tutor for absolute beginner. It does a good job on helping you to set up the camera and also help you to get the best setting for single kind of photography. For example, when you pick sports mode, it advise you to set high shutter speed to eliminate petition blur.

Guide mode is basically a super duper cordial menu that consists of three major options: Shooting, playback and camera setup. Shooting menu (the most foremost of all), divided into two, easy doing and developed operation.

Easy doing consists of Auto, no flash, distant subjects, sleeping faces (children), involving subjects, landscapes, portrait, and night portrait.

Advanced doing consists of soften background, ice petition (people) and ice petition (vehicle). Unlike the usual mode, Guide mode explains to you what kind of setting is foremost for single kind of photography, so you can gain understanding and knowledge of basic photography concept.

However, keep in mind that although his guide menu is very helpful, but it does not replace basic photography procedure or seminar.

Photo Retouch
D3000 offers some basic camera processing such as quick retouch (camera automatically improve or optimize the image). Miniature follow which is fun to play with. Basically you will need to pick a point in the image, and then the rest of the image will be blurred, giving a depth of field illusion.

Other basic retouches are also ready such as crop/trim, filter effects, color balance, Bw, sepia, etc. The downside is the processing time of one image could take up to 10 seconds.

Conclusion
I applaud Nikon for D3000 because the institute is very user cordial through Guide Mode. With the help of this mode, beginners will able to learn basic photography faster. Various photo retouches ignite creativity and fun. I also love the the installment of 11 Af theory which is regularly reserved for higher end cameras. D3000's competitors does not have this sophisticated Af system.

On the other hand, Nikon D3000 have two main weaknesses, first it does not have built-in Af motor for older but great lenses. D3000 also does not have live view mode which in fact can help tremendously in focusing those old lenses.

If you have Nikon D60 you might want to look for more developed camera such as Nikon D90 or D300. However, if you have Nikon D40 or contract cameras, this camera is a very good upgrade choice.

In short, Nikon D3000 is a solid camera for beginner that is simple, fun, and has great image quality. It is surely worth your money.
